While I was an artist in residence at Stove Works in June 2024, I spent the early mornings and late evenings walking through the Chattanooga National Cemetery down the block. I began documenting the flower arrangements in front of many of the graves. The veterans cemetery has many strict rules about acceptable decorations. Because of the uniformity of the cemetery’s rows of white marble slabs, I became interested in discerning moments of unique personality from these decorations — and when people broke the cemetery’s rules for declarations of love and memory.
